Why remodeling plans are so important

I'll resort to the old cliche "winners plan to win, losers fail to plan" I know it's tacky to use cliche's but this one is really true. Especially in remodeling your home.

If you don't have a remodeling plan, how will you;

  1. Know the contractor knows exactly what you are wanting?
  2. Be able to get a true cost quote for your project?

Without a plan no one really knows what anyone wants from your project.

If you are going to remodel any part of your home a plan just makes good sense for everyone.

  • You will have a definite plan for the contractor to build a quote. If you're using a design/build remodeler all the better to have a solid quote.

  • The designer should be able to show you what your new project will look like in 3D. (this is a great tool, seeing your project before the construction begins can save you thousands of dollars in change orders)

  • You know exactly what to expect, so if things are getting off track you can talk with the contractor and get them fixed before it's a big problem.

  • All materials, fixtures, colors and textures will be picked during the design phase so your remodel will be completed as fast as possible.

Things you can do before talking to anyone (and they're fun)

  • Start thinking about the remodel.
    • If you want an addition
      • What will you do in the new space? Host parties? or will it be a more private setting? The lighting will be just one subject that is affected by the function of the room.

  • Maybe sketch what you'd like the project to be. If you do this you'll really start to get the feel of the new space and what you'd like in it.

  • If you'd like a new bathroom.
    • What flooring would you like?
    • If using tile or wood, do you want a heated floor? It's great on those cold days.

These are just a couple of examples but I think you get the idea, try to feel what it will be like to live in the new space.

When talking with the designer

Always include everything you need and everything you want . If you think it will be to much money don't worry about it right now, you don't have to pay for any materials or appliances yet, list it all.

If after the design is done it turnes out you don't want to spend that much, you can start taking things out then and you'll have a better feel of what you can live without by this time.

Also if you have a load bearing wall that is in the way, don't worry about that either. All walls can be removed, definitly choose a contractor that is familier with taking them out.
